543 Members of Parliament are directly elected from single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post. A party or coalition needs 272 seats for a majority. The 18th Lok Sabha was elected in 2024.

Reserved Constituencies

Of the 543 seats, 84 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 47 for Scheduled Tribes (Delimitation Order, 2008). Only candidates from these communities may contest, but all voters in the constituency vote.

Eligibility

A candidate must be an Indian citizen, at least 25 years old and a registered voter anywhere in India. The security deposit is ₹25,000 (₹12,500 for SC/ST candidates), forfeited if the candidate polls under one-sixth of valid votes.

Term & Dissolution

The Lok Sabha's term is 5 years from its first sitting unless dissolved earlier by the President on the Prime Minister's advice. It can be extended by one year at a time only during a national emergency.
