Assam is a State in the North-East region of India, with its capital at Dispur. It sends 14 Members to the Lok Sabha and 7 to the Rajya Sabha, and elects a 126-member Legislative Assembly. The current government is led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma (Bharatiya Janata Party), in office since 10 May 2021 (re-elected 2026). In the 2026 Assembly election (9 Apr 2026, turnout 86%), the leading parties won: Bharatiya Janata Party 82, Indian National Congress 19, Asom Gana Parishad 10. The next Assembly election is due in 2031.
